Overview
NAKASEC was founded in 1994 by a network of local, grassroots Korean American organizations to project a progressive Asian American voice and leadership at the national level. Two main events precipitated NAKASEC’s founding: the Los Angeles Uprising and California’s Proposition 187. As a result, a political awakening of the Korean American community was catalyzed where we realized we could not keep our heads down and hope our children would have better lives. We needed to organize with other communities of color with shared vision and values towards an equitable world for all. Today, the NAKASEC network is composed of MinKwon Center (New York), Woori Center (Pennsylvania), NAKASEC VA (Virginia), HANA Center (Illinois) and Woori Juntos (Texas). These community-based organizations meet annually to determine NAKASEC’s national agenda and platform, ensuring NAKASEC is always informed by those community members it seeks to impact. The NAKASEC network focuses on the empowerment of our most marginalized community members, including the low-income, recent immigrant, limited English proficient, undocumented, women, youth, and seniors. We center immigrant justice, which means we approach our community in a holistic manner that centers the intersections of who we are as immigrants, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, class, and ability.
